Instrumental Music

Instrumental music education in SA government schools is organised by an education department program called Instrumental Music (IM).

In 2017, Magill School became a Music Focus School.

Face to Face lessons

Students can participate in small group music lessons and learn to play an instrument through special programs run by DfE Instrumental Music teacher.

Every endeavour will be made to accommodate all applicants.  If there are too many students for places in beginner classes, applications will be chosen based on music ability, suitability for specific instruments, and the balance of ensembles.

If children are offered a place in an Instrumental Music class, there is an expectation that the child continue this instrument for the duration of the year.

Students learning an instrument privately cannot learn that instrument in a DfE tuition class.  However, these students may wish to join the ensemble if there are vacancies, after a meeting with the ensemble director.

For more information, please refer to the Instrumental Music Program and Procedures Guidelines.

Ensembles

Students may be able to participate in school ensembles, such as concert band and string ensembles.  These ensembles allow students to:

  • Participate at their own level of skill
  • Experience a wide variety of musical styles or genres
  • Develop the capacity to maintain their own part in an ensemble
  • Give public performances
  • Develop life skills reflecting positive team work, tolerance, organisation and respect.

For more information, please refer to the Instrumental Music Program Procedures Guidelines.

Music Concert

The Term 4 music concert is a highlight of the school year.  It is an opportunity for students to showcase the hard work and commitment that they have put in throughout the year. Students perform various pieces of music as part of an ensemble. All students who receive tuition at Magill School are encouraged to participate in this concert.

Instrument Hire

Magill School have a number of instruments available for hire at a fee of $180 per year, however, we cannot provide all students with a Magill School instrument.  If we are not able to supply an instrument, we will source the instrument from the Instrumental Music department (in the first instance) and then a private company offering competitive prices.  Please do not make private hire arrangement.

If you are thinking about purchasing an instrument for your child, please consult your child’s IM teacher for suitability, sizing etc.
